The Countdown to St Patrick’s Day Shenanigans is On!

Ventura’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a great tradition with lots of people celebrating… and a few shenanigans! Here are the details on the 2015 parade.

Downtown Ventura’s 27th St Patrick’s Day Parade is Saturday, March 14th

st-pats-cycleEach year, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day with parades, Irish dancing, traditional fare and a whole lot of green. Ventura’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of its greatest traditions with folks coming from all over to enjoy the celebration… and a few shenanigans! The parade is also the largest and the most famous one held in Ventura each year. Volunteers from The Ventura Elks Lodge #1430 have helped put on the Parade for 27 years. What originally started as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture and good fun.

“Honoring our Troops” is the 2015 parade theme

Each year, the Parade Committee picks a theme for the parade. This year’s theme is Honoring Our Troops, paying homage to those serving in the United States armed forces. Many of the floats in the parade will have service men or women riding along. It will be a day to honor all they have done for our county and for us.

In keeping with this year’s theme, the Parade Committee chose Jeff Gorell as the parade’s Grand Marshall. Jeff is a third generation member of the U.S. Navy. He is a Commander and Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, a two-time veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and continues to serve as an operations officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Within days of the September 11 attacks in 2001 he was recalled to active duty to support Operation Enduring Freedom. He spent a one-year deployment in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. He was decorated for leadership and meritorious actions in a combat zone. He led multiple teams of combat cameramen into the mountains of Afghanistan to embed with small Special Forces teams as they captured enemy weapons caches and fought the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists. He was mobilized for his second tour in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in March 2011. He was embedded with U.S. Marines as an intelligence officer at Camp Leatherneck in Helmand, Afghanistan. He returned home and to his work in the California State Legislature in March 2012.

With a little help from the Elks

Councilman and parade co-founder Jim Monahan

Councilman and parade co-founder Jim Monahan

The annual parade was the brainchild of Councilman Jim Monahan, Arnold Hubbard and Larry Dineen. They wanted to create a fun way for the whole community to come together, get involved and celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. So these two Irishmen, Monahan and Deieen, and their friend Hubbard brought the idea to the local Elks Lodge. From there a tradition was born and has continued for 27 years.

Totally Local VC’s little bit of green

st-pats-tlvcTotally Local VC has been taking part in the parade for over six years. Founder Kat Merrick has participated for almost 20 years. Each year Totally Local VC hosts a float featuring local musicians like Dan Grimm and Friends, farmers, ranchers, locally-owned businesses, purveyors and fans. This year, make sure to give a big shout out to them as they head by on the parade route and encourage everyone to support local.
