Surf Rodeo 2014: Yee-haw And Cowabunga Dude!

Surf Rodeo combined a beach-based twist on a rodeo with musical acts, a bikini contest, a street fair, food, sun and fun.

The 2014 Surf Rodeo has come and gone but the great music, good times and a little hay will remain with us for quite a while. The Surf Rodeo, which took place on July 12th and 13th, takes the spirit of a rodeo – a mix of the competitive sport/practice of cattle herding and other variety acts – and brings it to the beach. Instead of roping steers, surf-rodeo-2014-musicianSurf Rodeo competitors battled the waves from their surf boards, ride the mechanical bull and attempt to conquer all that in a hay-bale race in the hopes of being crowned Surf Rodeo Grand Champion.

The event also featured top musical acts, a bikini contest, a street fair and, yes, it was all set right in the sand at Pierpont Beach, Ventura CA. The event drew record numbers as folks came out to surf, watch, listen and enjoy. The Surf Rodeo is truly one of the must do Ventura County events each the year and we are already looking forward to the next one.

Once upon a time there was a boy who decided not to grow up

There are people we are drawn to, friends who inspire us, motivate and make us want to stand on the edge and jump in. For anyone who knows JD Drury (founder or the Surf Rodeo) or has gone on a Jud run, you know what I am talking about. The funny thing is that, for some of us, time does not change these things; it seems to only enhance us and push us more toward it… to go with it and to jump in and enjoy the adventure.

surf-rodeo-2014-peopleReminiscing about the many years of friendship JD and I have shared, I kept thinking, “What is it about people like JD that draws us in?” Is it that warm‐hearted charismatic kind of personality or that elfish smile that tells you a little mischief is coming soon? Then it finally hit me: he is Peter Pan and many of us – friends, family, team members – realize that we are the “lost boys.” We are still searching for Never Never Land and, I must add, having a damn good time doing so!

So come with me, where dreams are born, and time is never planned. Just think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings, forever, in Never Never Land.

— Peter Pan

Special thanks to JD and Amber Drury and the Surf Rodeo Crew for a job well done.
